On the Rocks Field Trips Committee

The On-The-Rocks Committee, which is responsible for organizing and leading RMAG geological field trips. Their motto is “See more rocks!” This group of intrepid explorers works to plan exciting trips with subject-matter experts to explore the fascinating geology of the Rocky Mountain region.

Each year, the committee organizes between eight and twelve field trips over the course of the season. Most trips are day trips departing from Denver, but the schedule also includes a handful of overnight trips to more distant parts of the region—and sometimes even a rafting trip! In 2024, we hosted 10 trips across Colorado, examining features such as the Lyons Formation in Lory State Park, the geology of the San Juans, and Colorado’s newest state park, Fishers Peak.

Committee members are responsible for developing field trip ideas and planning the logistics, including enlisting area experts to lead trips, setting dates, and determining what will be covered on each tour. For trips you organize, you’ll also serve as the trip coordinator. The time commitment includes monthly committee meetings, with trip planning for coordinators requiring an additional 6 to 12 hours per trip. Over the course of the field season, we encourage committee members to participate in other trips and assist their fellow coordinators. Field trips themselves are typically full-day events.

Joining the On-The-Rocks Committee is your chance to organize that dream trip you’ve always wanted to take, with the support of a team of passionate geologists who can help make it happen.

If you are interested in joining, please fill out this committee application, or if you just have questions, please contact the RMAG office at staff@rmag.org
