ON THE ROCKS Presents

Fossil Digging in Wyoming

Your Best Day of Fishing Ever!

June 20, 2026

Trip Coordinator: Rob Diedrich

Trip Description

Join RMAG on June 20th for a family‑friendly trip to Tynskys Quarry in Kemmerer, Wyoming, where we’ll dig for Eocene‑aged fish fossils from the Green River Formation. Tynskys is a family‑owned quarry, and participants may keep all the fossils they find—except for rare specimens. Guides, digging and splitting tools will be provided, though you’re welcome to bring your own rock hammer. Children of all ages are welcome; ages three and under are free. A previous RMAG participant states “this was the best day of fishing I ever had.”

Meeting Location & Start Time

We’ll meet at 8:00 a.m. at Tynskys Fossil Shop, 716 JC Penney Dr. in downtown Kemmerer, WY.  After a brief safety talk and completion of waiver forms, we will caravan to the quarry. The road to the site can be rough, so high‑clearance vehicles are strongly recommended. Carpooling will be available for those who prefer not to drive to the quarry site.

What to Expect & What to Bring

We will spend the morning digging and should finish around lunchtime. Please bring your own food, lots of water, and snacks. Please wear a sun hat and bring sun and wind protection and sturdy closed‑toe shoes (no sandals). Participants should bring boxes to carry their fossils—produce boxes from grocery stores (also Costco/Sam’s) work especially well-- and newspaper to wrap your finds.
