Geochem 101: A Practical Introduction to Petroleum Geochemistry

This one-day short course is an overview that will introduce attendees to some basic rock and fluid applications of petroleum geochemistry, including a description of the basic tools used and how to interpret the data from those tools. Some of these tools include Rock-Eval pyrolysis, rock extract GC, gas stable carbon isotopes, and oil GC. Short exercises will be prepared for the attendees to work after concepts have been presented to demonstrate some interpretation tools.

We will offer this one-day virtual short course in two sessions, a morning session and an afternoon session. 

Pricing:

  • Members: $75
  • Non-members: $110 (includes 1-year membership to RMAG)
  • Students: $75 (limited to first 5 students to register and includes RMAG membership)

Logistics Details:

  • Time: Morning session 9:00 AM -12:00 PM; afternoon session 1:00-4:00 PM. 
  • Venue: The class will be held online via the RingCentral Meetings app. The functionality is the same as Zoom. An access link and instructions for downloading the app will be sent out in your confirmation email and again a few days before the class.
  • Refunds: Refunds will be issued up to one week before the class, Oct. 15, 2020. If you find out you are unable to attend after this date, you may transfer your registration to another person, or you may transfer the registration fee to another event. Please contact the office for help with transferring your registration.
  • Students: We have a limited number (5) of discounted student registrations available for $100 each on a first come, first served basis. If you are a student member of RMAG, you may login and register. If you are a student but not an RMAG member, please contact the RMAG Office for help with registering. The $100 registration fee includes a complimentary student membership.

Bio:

Mark Tobey has been an advisor and petroleum geochemist on Ovintiv’s exploration team since 2004. After earning a Ph.D. in analytical and organic chemistry at Texas A&M University, Mark started as a process chemist with Exxon Chemical in Baton Rouge, LA. He later assisted in setting up Saudi Aramco’s petroleum geochemistry laboratory in Dhahran under the direction of Ed Colling. Following nine years in Saudi Arabia, Mark joined Dan Jarvie as a “Humble” geochemist before joining Ovintiv.
