Join us for this unique opportunity to explore and learn about the mixed siliciclastic-carbonate system in the Permian Basin in the classroom and the field! Dr. Rick Sarg of the Colorado School of Mines will present a 2-day short course in September and then lead a 5-day field trip in October. Participants may register for either the short course or the field trip separately or for both and receive a discount.

Field Trip details:

This field trip will introduce participants to a series of some of the finest outcrop exposures of carbonate and deepwater siliciclastic rocks in the world. Principle themes of the trip are: (1) to observe the characteristics of a wide variety of sedimentary environments and lithofacies in the Permian section of the Permian basin, including examples of conventional and unconventional siliciclastic and carbonate reservoirs, and organic-rich mudrocks; (2) to observe sequence stratigraphic architecture at seismic scale; and (3) to observe reservoir flow unit architecture. Continuous outcrops in West Texas and New Mexico expose the majority of the Paleozoic rocks which are producing both conventional and unconventional hydrocarbons in the Permian basin of West Texas.

Dates: October 13-18, 2019

Location: El Paso, TX (1 night) and Carlsbad, NM (4 nights)

Short Course details:

This two-day workshop provides an introduction to the application of carbonate and sandstone facies, diagenesis, and seismic sequence stratigraphy to exploration and production focused on the Late Paleozoic carbonates and siliciclastics of the Permian basin. This includes conventional and unconventional reservoirs. The workshop combines seismic, well log and rock data, and the concepts of sequence stratigraphy to develop interpretations of Permian basin hydrocarbon systems, and characterize reservoirs and seals. At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to integrate sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy principles to help predict unconventional basin and slope systems such as the Wolfcamp/Bone Spring, basin to slope transitions, and Permo-Penn shelfal reservoir rocks. The workshop covers (1) a review of the different carbonate and siliciclastic systems relevant to the Permian basin and their different seismic facies; and (2) discussion of mudrocks and associated coarser debrites and turbidites that comprise unconventional Permian rocks. Exercises will illustrate these topics and include integrated seismic-well log-rock examples.
